Meet Matthew S. DeLange: Dedicated to Serving Kent County Families

Family and Community Roots: I grew up in Fremont, Michigan, in a family that valued hard work, service, and community. My father worked as an aircraft mechanic, and my mother ran a daycare, which gave me early exposure to the importance of supporting families. After graduating from Fremont High School, I moved to the Grand Rapids area to attend Grand Valley State University, where I earned my degree in Criminal Justice and Computer Information Systems. Since then, I’ve called Kent County home and have built my career serving the families of this community.

A Lifelong Commitment to Family Law: Over the last 16 years, I’ve dedicated my legal career to family law because I believe that the court’s role in helping families resolve disputes is critical. As a partner at MI Family Law Group, I have helped families navigate some of the most emotionally charged and legally complex situations, from custody battles to international disputes. I’ve always strived to make the legal process accessible and clear for the families I serve, ensuring they understand their rights and options every step of the way.

Expertise in Complex Family Law Matters: My practice has given me the opportunity to work on cases that go beyond the usual family law issues. I’ve handled interstate and international family court matters, ensuring the safe return of children who were wrongfully taken out of the country, and advising families on how to navigate the complexities of custody across state lines. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to bring thoughtful, compassionate solutions to Kent County families.

Serving the Legal Community: In addition to my practice, I am passionate about contributing to the broader legal community. Over the years, I’ve spoken at local and state conferences, sharing insights on navigating complex legal issues like the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act (UCCJEA) and other family law topics. I believe that sharing knowledge and fostering a collaborative legal environment benefits not only legal professionals but also the families we serve.

Why I’m Running for Probate Judge: My decision to run for Probate Judge, assigned to the Family Division, stems from my deep commitment to the families of Kent County. Family law cases are often emotionally charged, and I believe that the court should provide a space where families are treated with fairness, compassion, and respect. As a Family Court judge, I will focus on de-escalating conflicts, ensuring that each party feels heard, and prioritizing the best interests of children. I want to bring my years of experience to the bench to help families find the solutions they need during some of the most challenging times in their lives.

Beyond the Law: Outside of my legal practice, I enjoy spending time with my wife Stephanie. I am also very close to my nephews, Sawyer and Parker, who have been a big part of my life since they were born. My experiences as a family man, uncle, and member of this community shape the way I approach my work in family law. I understand the impact that legal decisions have on families, and I’m committed to bringing that understanding to the courtroom.

Looking Forward: I look forward to the opportunity to serve as your next Probate Judge. This position is about more than just making rulings; it’s about ensuring that families feel heard, respected, and treated fairly. I am dedicated to creating a future where Kent County families can rely on the court for compassionate, thoughtful, and balanced decisions.
